So you might have noticed, over the past few months, your Instagram feed being taken over by this lighter than air, fluffy tall dried grass. I saw some everywhere during our vacations last week in Los Angeles too. What’s up with that? Move over eucalyptus, Pampas grass has landed and it’s taking interiors by storm.

What is Pampas?

Its scientific name is Cortaderia Selloana, C. Selloana (for short) and there are approximately 25 species of Cortaderia Selloana, although the C. Selloana variety is commonly referred to as Pampas grass. Growing to heights of 5′ to 10′, it is considered by some to be a sort of nuisance and an imposing weed.

Its colour is most often natural, although some have pinkish plumes. The brighter colour varieties were simply spray painted for effect. Also, be careful of heating plinths, or open fire such as candles and stove tops as dried Pampas is very flammable.

Buying Pampas Grass

When buying Pampas grass, look for reeds that are tall and strong with plumes that are full and fluffy. To ensure the best value, consider reed height, as well as whether or not the plumes have been treated for minimize shedding. You’re bound to lose some volume to shedding if plumes have not been treated, so the fuller, the better. Now for us “nordic” people of Canada, finding Pampas grass is not as easy an affair as it is in warmer climates. I have seen a variety of Pampas grass growing on the side of highways and in fields. If you go and pick some, so it carefully, bring a sharp pair of scissors as the reeds are hard to cut by hand, and let the reeds dry upside down before placing them around your house.

In terms of decor, the Pampas grass inspires natural textures and muted colours for a California Casual vibe that is also very much on point.

I did find some pink Pampas seeds at the nursery this spring (which was super exciting), but so far they haven’t grown at all. I am not sure if it is my soil, the light they get or simply that the seeds weren’t good. Anyhoo.

For now, here are some inspirations

I am also an interiors curator, a colour junkie {obsessed with all things blue}, and an eternal optimist with a visceral inclination towards wanderlust. I am the author of two books and I have the privilege to share my passion as a decor specialist on television.

Welcome to Damask & Dentelle, a lifestyle blog with an eye for design. It is where the lovely things land.

I write in both English mais aussi dans la belle langue de Molière.
